Transformed a legacy EdTech platform into a scalable SaaS product
When i-immersive began exploring the future of its ClassView platform, the ambition was clear: move beyond a legacy video connection tool and build a modern, scalable platform designed specifically for immersive education.
I-immersive works with colleges and training providers across the UK, supporting immersive learning rooms that allow students and lecturers to collaborate across campuses. With around 10,000 users across ~90 organisations, including large multi-campus colleges, reliability and usability were critical. However, the existing ClassView 1 platform was increasingly unstable, limited in functionality, and costly to maintain. Service disruptions were beginning to impact live teaching sessions, and expectations from customers were rising.
The challenge was not incremental improvement. It required a complete rebuild.
The Challenge
ClassView 1 had reached its technical limits.
The system offered basic room-to-room video connections, but little beyond that. Authentication was fragile, interfaces were confusing, and scalability was constrained. Migration failures caused significant service disruption, including cancelled sessions at major colleges. Maintaining the legacy infrastructure was expensive, and the platform struggled to compete with mainstream tools such as Teams and Zoom.
At the same time, education providers were demanding more. Cross-institutional collaboration, recurring sessions, event-style broadcasts, recording libraries, analytics, and mobile access were increasingly expected as standard. To remain competitive, i-immersive needed a platform purpose-built for immersive classrooms, not a patched legacy system.
The rebuild also had to be managed carefully. Both ClassView 1 and ClassView 2 would need to run in parallel during migration, with rollback capability in case of issues. Reliability was non-negotiable.
We’ve worked closely with GearedApp for several years as our outsourced development partner, and they’ve become an integral part of our business. From day one, Josh and Andrzej have led the relationship with openness, trust, and a genuine commitment to our success. Their team – particularly Dávid and Oscar – consistently deliver high-quality, reliable work, often going above and beyond to ensure our projects not only meet deadlines but exceed expectations. What stands out most is their ability to combine technical expertise with a collaborative approach, making them feel less like an agency and more like an extension of our own team. Thanks to GearedApp’s support, we’ve been able to scale our product, innovate faster, and focus on what we do best. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to any organisation looking for a dependable, forward-thinking development partner.

What We Did
We partnered with i-immersive to design and build ClassView 2, a complete platform rewrite delivered from the ground up.
The new system was built on a modern, cloud-native architecture using AWS infrastructure and WebRTC-based video integration. We overhauled the entire user experience, introducing a structured, role-based access model with Student, User, and Admin permissions, alongside multi-factor authentication to improve security and accountability.
Session management was redesigned to support recurring bookings, calendar integration, and clearer scheduling workflows. Breakout rooms were introduced to enable sub-group collaboration within larger sessions, and an events module allowed institutions to run public or private cross-campus events with registration and waitlist functionality.
A recording system was built directly into the platform, incorporating AI-powered transcription, chapter generation, and searchable content libraries. Rather than relying on expensive third-party integrations, we designed an in-house solution to retain control over functionality, intellectual property, and long-term innovation.
Throughout development, we worked in structured sprints with staging environments, feature flags, and rollback capability. Migration was handled organisation by organisation, reducing risk and allowing for hands-on support during transition.
Transforming the Experience
Before ClassView 2, immersive learning sessions were limited to basic connections between rooms. Security relied on PIN-based access, functionality was restricted, and user experience was inconsistent. Recording management was minimal, and cross-institution collaboration required workarounds.
With ClassView 2 in place, colleges can schedule structured sessions, manage permissions securely, host collaborative events across institutions, and access AI-powered recordings with searchable transcripts. The platform supports mobile access, improved moderation controls, and advanced analytics that provide visibility into usage and engagement.
For i-immersive as a business, the transformation was equally significant. ClassView 2 introduced a scalable SaaS foundation capable of supporting new licensing tiers, premium features, and future marketplace concepts. Infrastructure costs were reduced, operational reliability improved, and the platform became a differentiator rather than a liability.

Next Steps
The focus now shifts to completing migration across remaining customer organisations and refining features based on real-world feedback. Short-term priorities include expanding super-admin functionality, enhancing cross-organisation event management, and addressing remaining feature gaps identified during pilot rollout.
Looking ahead, ClassView 2 provides the foundation for broader strategic initiatives, including marketplace functionality, advanced AI-powered learning tools, and deeper community features that enable cross-institution collaboration at national scale.
With the legacy platform replaced, i-immersive is now positioned not just to retain customers, but to grow into a more competitive, differentiated player in the UK education technology market.
